What Is Ajax Famous For?

Total Football

Under coach Rinus Michels and captain Johan Cruyff, the Ajax side of the late 1960s and early 1970s played a fluid, position-swapping style that came to be called Total Football. It won three consecutive European Cups (1971, 1972, 1973) and shaped the way the Netherlands, Barcelona and much of modern football think about the game. Our tactical legacy page traces that influence.

The Academy

Ajax's youth academy, De Toekomst ("The Future"), is one of the most productive in world football. It produced Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Edwin van der Sar, Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert, Wesley Sneijder, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, among many others. The club's approach to developing young players is explained in Ajax youth development.

European Success

Ajax have won the European Cup / Champions League four times (1971, 1972, 1973 and 1995), the UEFA Cup (1992), the Cup Winners' Cup (1987), and two Intercontinental Cups — one of a handful of clubs to have won all three major UEFA trophies. Relive the big matches in European Nights.

Producing and Selling Talent

Because the Eredivisie cannot match the revenues of Europe's biggest leagues, Ajax runs a develop-and-sell model: players are brought through the academy or signed young, showcased in Amsterdam and Europe, and sold to larger clubs. How that model works financially is covered in Ajax transfers and Ajax finances.
